Water resource management program and the use of sustainable processes in oil palm cultivation 3min Articles August 14th, 2024 Grupo BBF The Amazon, the lungs of the world, needs special care. And water quality is one of the most important indicators of the health of this ecosystem. Grupo BBF , the largest palm oil producer in Latin America, invests in protecting the region's water resources. With a rigorous monitoring program, the company keeps a close eye on water quality in rivers and streams, driving a more sustainable future for the Amazon. A Commitment to Water Grupo BBF invests in water resource management programs in the five states of the Amazon region in which it operates. In all, the company monitors more than 150 points, 89 of which are surface points and 65 underground points in rivers and streams in Pará, Roraima, Rondônia, Acre and Amazonas. By analyzing more than 50 physical, chemical and biological parameters, the company identifies possible problems and takes measures to mitigate them. To give you an idea of the importance of the number of surface and underground points assessed by the company, the National Water and Basic Sanitation Agency (ANA) has 215 surface monitoring points in the northern region and the Brazilian Geological Service (SGB) network has 92 underground monitoring points. The Actions of Grupo BBF for water monitoring Sample collection and analysis: The company carries out regular collections at various points in rivers and streams, analyzing the samples in the laboratory to identify any changes in water quality. Effluent treatment: The effluents generated by palm oil production are treated and used as fertilizer on the plantations, reducing the environmental impact and optimizing resources. Composting and fertigation: Production waste is transformed into organic compost, which is used as fertilizer in the growing areas, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers and promoting soil fertility. Employee training: The company invests in training its employees to ensure that sustainable practices are implemented at all stages of production. Thanks to this work, Grupo BBF contributes to the preservation of the Amazon's biodiversity, guaranteeing water quality for local communities and future generations. By continuously investing in improvements for the communities around its operations, Grupo BBF proves that it is possible to combine environmental preservation, socio-economic development and the generation of jobs and income in the northern region.
