The Grupo BBF Brasil BioFuels) has taken another important step towards becoming a benchmark in sustainability and agricultural efficiency, with the adoption of sustainable fertilization and fertigation practices from the processing of oil palm at the Acará and Moju mills in Pará. The project, recently implemented by the company, brings significant benefits to the soil and the surrounding communities.

Fertigation with POME (Palm Oil Mill Effluent), or oil palm processing effluent, is an agricultural technique that combines the application of natural fertilizers with irrigation. This process carried out in the company's plantations has gained prominence in the field, as it is an important organic source for natural fertilization.

At the Grupo BBF, all liquid effluent generated in the oil palm production process is treated. With sprinkling, carried out using high-tech equipment, the method adopted by the company has become more efficient, safe and sustainable.

Among the benefits of this process is improved soil fertility, as it provides a rich source of essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium, which are released gradually, promoting plant nutrition over time. In addition to sustainability and reducing environmental impacts, the initiative guarantees the reuse of POME.

The Grupo BBF 's sustainable fertilization program began with the application on the Silva Oliveira and Watanabe farms, in one of the company's Hubs, located in the municipality of Acará/PA. The new system also optimized logistics and avoided operating costs.

Community Engagement

The Santa Maria and Terra Viva communities, located around the application areas, were also actively involved in the process. Meetings and practical demonstrations ensured transparency and allowed residents to closely monitor the benefits of the new method.

According to the Grupo BBF, dialog with communities is fundamental to strengthening sustainable practices. The project was well received, with a guarantee of continuity in future applications, where community members were invited to get to know the company's fertigation process up close, as well as learning about the sustainable fertilization project and its application in their localities.

The sustainable organic fertilizer made available by the company to the communities benefits the planting carried out directly by the families who grow various crops in the region, such as açaí, cacao, black pepper, pitaya, cupuaçu, acerola, as well as the farmers encouraged by the Grupo BBF 's Family Farming program, who plant oil palm.

"The community's approval of the method, in addition to the correct disposal of the effluent and the benefits to the soil, has brought greater integration between the company and the local farming population. This project reinforces our commitment to responsible agricultural practices by consolidating fertigation as a milestone in the sustainable management of resources and as a mechanism for strengthening community relations. The success of the initiative paves the way for new actions that combine productivity and environmental preservation," says Milton Steagall, CEO of the Grupo BBF.

In 2025, the Grupo BBF will continue its schedule of actions with the communities, including meetings and receiving demands via letter from residents who need sustainable organic fertilizer for their agricultural crops. The company continues to invest in improvements and partnerships with the communities located around its operations, carrying out maintenance work on side roads, opening ponds for fish farming, building bridges and socio-environmental actions, among other initiatives.
