With oil palm, company expands renewable energy generation in northern Brazil

Focused on agribusiness, grupo BBF operates sustainably

With its operations focused on agribusiness, the Brasil BioFuels (Grupo BBF) has expanded its sustainable energy generation in the northern region of Brazil. The company uses oil palm, also known as dendê, as a raw material in its production process.

Founded in 2008, Grupo BBF operates in five states in the northern region of Brazil. They are: Acre, Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia and Roraima. This Thursday, the 15th, the company released the results of its 2022 operations.

"The report shows the expansion of the business and the diversification of our product portfolio," said Milton Steagall, CEO of Grupo BBF. He pointed out that the company has grown robustly and sustainably within the premises of environmental, social and governance care.

The company increased from 68,000 hectares in 2021 to 75,000 hectares cultivated with oil palm in 2022, according to the data presented in the report. Thus, the new quantity corresponds to almost 40% of the entire area dedicated to this crop in the country.

According to the document, the company also doubled its biodiesel production capacity, reaching the 64 million liters per year mark. In addition, the generation of renewable energy now covers 140,000 customers. This amount is 27% more, compared to the previous year.

In all, 25 plants are in operation, with a generating capacity of 86.8 megawatts (MW) of energy. In 2021, there were 24 plants, with a potential of 51 MW and serving more than 110,000 customers.

"Our plants remove about 106 million liters of fossil diesel from the Amazon and reduce the emission of 250,000 tons of carbon equivalent into the atmosphere," Steagall explains.

According to the CEO of Grupo BBFthe company plans to expand its oil palm plantations in the northern region of Brazil. The goal is to "increase sustainable palm cultivation by an additional 100,000 hectares in Roraima, in the region of São João da Baliza, where the company was born," the report said.
