Grupo BBF and Environment Secretariats sign partnership for socio-environmental actions in Pará in 2025 6min 06 December, 2024 With the partnership, Grupo BBF 's Socio-Environmental Education Program should reach around 80 local communities in six cities in the state Representatives of the environmental secretariats of six municipalities in the northeast of Pará visited the operations of Grupo BBF (Brasil BioFuels) on Thursday (05) to formalize a commitment agreement with the company to support the actions planned in local communities through the "2025 Socio-Environmental Education Program". During the visit, the representatives also had access to the indicators of Grupo BBF 's social initiatives in the state, which total more than 200 actions implemented in the cities of Acará, Moju, Tomé-Açu, Concordia, Bujaru and Abaetetuba. The aim of the partnership is to continue supporting actions to raise awareness about environmental preservation and the recovery of degraded areas. These initiatives include workshops, lectures and practical activities with local communities to promote sustainable actions and the responsible use of natural resources. In addition, the partnership aims to strengthen environmental education in schools, encouraging children and young people to become guardians of the environment. The collaboration between Grupo BBF and the secretariats also aims to develop projects to plant tree seedlings in schools and protect biodiversity, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future in the region. Since 2008, Grupo BBF has been working to recover degraded areas or areas in the process of degradation, always in harmony with nature and protecting more than 60,000 hectares of Permanent Preservation Areas (APP) and Legal Reserves (RL) in the Amazon. The company currently cultivates more than 75,000 hectares of oil palm in the states of Pará and Roraima, contributing to the recovery of the Amazon rainforest, job creation and socio-economic development in the northern region. In Brazil, the sustainable cultivation of oil palm follows the Agroecological Zoning of Oil Palm, decree 7.172 of the Federal Government of May 2010, recovering areas that were degraded until 2007 in the Amazon. In addition, more than 31 million hectares in the Amazon region have been identified as suitable for oil palm cultivation by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa). "We introduced palm cultivation in degraded areas that were bare and lifeless. It's a plant that recovers degraded soil and contributes to connectivity between natural environments, mitigating impacts associated with the fragmentation of ecosystems, which contributes to the preservation of biodiversity in the region. In addition, actions to raise awareness about the environment are ongoing and should start from the school level right up to everyday life in institutions, so that together we can keep our forest standing," explains Milton Steagall, CEO of Grupo BBF. Developing and supporting local communities In order to work with the communities around its operations, Grupo BBF has a Community Relations Plan, drawn up since the start of its operations in Pará, which brings together guidelines, management tools and procedures for social action. The company's relationship with communities is always based on open dialog and transparency. Through its commitment to the well-being of communities, the company continually invests in local development, with infrastructure works, welfare services and professional training to improve people's lives. These actions are part of the larger purpose of generating jobs, income and development in a sustainable way. In order to fulfill its objective of participating effectively in the conservation of biodiversity in the Amazon Region and the recovery of Degraded Areas, the company adopts monitoring programs in all the areas around its operations with the adoption of the best alternative for the environmental rehabilitation of each site. Among Grupo BBF's monitoring programs, priority areas are identified for recovery or restoration of vegetation. To this end, projects are carried out that prioritize the use of native species, taking into account: the preparation of seedlings, maintenance of vegetated areas, afforestation of the agro-industrial hubs' agro-villages, recovery of quarry areas altered by the exploitation of laterite, a survey of local farmers, preferably family farmers, for partnerships, an intense employee awareness program and incentives for partner farmers to maintain sustainable use of the soil, without using fire to clear the area. "Signing this partnership with the Environmental Secretariats in Pará for the 2025 Socio-Environmental Education Program is an important milestone for Grupo BBF and for the municipalities involved. Strengthening environmental education in the communities surrounding our operations is our commitment to contributing to the future of the planet and the next generations," concludes the CEO of Grupo BBF.
